The Little Fishery: Love and Loss on the Riverside
This is the story of the first 14 years of my life and of growing up in a house by the River Thames in Maidenhead in the 1950s. I learnt early on that my father’s word was law; and, as the youngest of four siblings, I struggled to make sense of my mother’s unhappiness and my sister’s hostility towards me.
Even so, I loved our house and playing out secret adventures in its spacious gardens; and I loved our holidays on the beach by the sea at our hotel in St Ives, Cornwall. These were my continuing salvation against the terror and grief I felt at being sent away to boarding school, when I was nine – and then at 14, while I was away again at school, my parents separated and my ‘home’ was sold.
